Beguiling Benares

    Benares, a city on the banks of river Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, has a rich history which is mentioned in the Vedas of Hindu culture and in the great Hindu epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata. Also known as Varnasi, this sacred place is the most inhabited traditional place and the oldest living city on earth. Varnasi is also known as the Spiritual capital of India.

     It was believed that Varnasi was mainly populated by Vedic people. The oldest Vedic scripture, Atharvaveda suggests that indigenous tribes were prevalent in Varnasi, which dated approximately to the same period. Varnasi hence had been the home for many Vedic scholars. Buddhism is also started at Varnasi. The very famous and great scholarly book, Ramcharithamanas is written in this holy city by Tulsidas.

     Varnasi, which is popularly known as Kasi, is a melting pot of cultures and traditions. Varanasi is one of the holiest cities and centres of pilgrimage for Hindus of all denominations and also to many other religions. It is one of the seven Hindu holiest cities (Sapta Puri), considered the giver of salvation. People believe that bathing in the Ganges remits sins.
